Dubai, UAE – Union Coop proudly announces its full support for the Executive Council of Dubai’s policy to ban all single-use bags starting June 1, 2024. In alignment with this significant environmental initiative, all Union Coop retail outlets will transition to offering a variety of environmentally sustainable alternatives, such as reusable cloth bags and other eco-friendly options.

Dr. Suhail Al Bastaki, Director of Corp. Communication Dept. at Union Coop, stated, “This ban is a crucial step towards reducing wastage and creating a cleaner, greener environment for Dubai. As always, Dubai will lead the world by example. We are committed to supporting this initiative and encourage our customers to embrace these changes for a more sustainable future.”

Union Coop has been a proactive participant in environmental sustainability efforts. In July 2022, the company was among the first entities to implement the ‘limitation’ on the sale of single-use plastic bags, following the Executive Council of Dubai’s introduction of a tariff on single-use plastic bags. This early initiative set the groundwork for the upcoming complete ban.

In preparation for this major change, Union Coop has been diligently working to ensure a seamless transition. The company has been collaborating with suppliers to source a diverse range of environmentally sustainable alternatives, ensuring that customers have access to options like reusable cloth bags at competitive prices.

“We have always prioritized the welfare of the community and the environment,” said Dr. Al Bastaki. “We did not stock large quantities of single-use bags, and any remaining stock will be disposed of following eco-friendly protocols. We are confident that our customers, who are perceptive and responsible, will support this change.”

To facilitate the transition and encourage customers to adopt reusable bags, Union Coop is implementing several strategies and offering perks, details of which will be revealed soon. The company is committed to actively promoting the benefits of reusable bags through various channels, including in-store signage, social media campaigns, blogs, magazines, TV and radio programs, and educational materials. Additionally, comprehensive training programs for on-ground staff are underway to better serve customers during this transition.
