Reality Check – Walking Vs Running for Staying in Shape
Some people love walking while some people prefer to feel the blood rush when they are running. We have to agree that both ‘walking’ and ‘running’ are some of the best forms of cardio and fat loss. However, there have been debates and arguments on which one is better for fat loss and overall health. For those who have a liking for high-intensity workouts and burning more calories, running is the way to go, at the same time ‘walking’ is something everyone can do to be active and maintain a healthy weight.
Here are some health benefits of ‘Cardio’:
- Weight loss and maintenance
- Healthy Immune system
- Stamina boost
- Healthy Digestion and Metabolism
- Heart health
Is walking better than running?
Walking and Running share the same benefits with running burning more calories in a faster manner. However, when it comes to longevity and consistency ‘walking’ walks away as the clear winner because irrespective of age or physical condition you are in, anyone can walk his or her way to fitness.
Common injuries associated with running:
- Shin splints (acute pain in the shin and lower leg caused by prolonged running, typically on hard surfaces)
- Minor stress fractures
- IT Band Syndrome or Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Bottom-line and TIPs: both are a brilliant form of cardiovascular exercises to get in decent shape and an average individual should at least walk 30 minutes a day to lead a healthy lifestyle. However, if you are interested in running then focus on learning your natural posture to run injury-free and spend money on some decent running shoes.
Thanks to the wise UAE leadership, nearly all public parks have foam-based running tracks that help prevent sudden shocks to the knee and heel of the runner. Finally, it would be fruitful to conclude that both Running and Walking are an excellent form of ‘fitness’, which is why we have the Dubai Fitness Challenge, an initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council for Dubai Government.
